What is "indie"

When Odd Duck first began, it was titled “Odd Duck Handmade Bazaar and Indie Craft Fair”. Although recently shortening it down, we chose that name because it combined all of the things we were trying to express with our show. We wanted people to know that....

1. we were Odd Duck 
2. that we were a handmade show 
3. we were a little bizarre and 'bazaar' is closer to that than 'show' and 
4. we were an “indie” craft fair

Four very successful annual shows later I'm still being asked the question, What does indie mean?

In short, “indie” means independent. Indie crafters are the ones who go their own way. Indie artisans don't always march to the beat of the same drum (although beating a drum is pretty common among independent spirits). Indie describes how we take tried-and-true techniques and sprinkle in characteristics of the modern world. Indie is turning things upside down and expressing from a different perspective. Indie is making something old and discarded into something new and different. Indie is whatever you want it to be. Indie is playing by your own rules.

Odd Duck Bazaar is a way to fit that independent spirit into the “normal” world. We are all used to the daily transactions of commerce, but you can't go into your big box store and find what you'll find at an indie craft fair. The love, care and conscious design that you'll find in products at Odd Duck cannot be produced in a factory.

As show hosts, we have to fit into the parameters of laws and procedures to pull off the organization aspect of the show but we don't always go down the same path as a regular craft show production. We yarn bomb bicycles for advertising, we hand paint our show signage, we use recycled materials to create gifts for our vendors and giveaways for our customers, we build our own flags, write our own press releases, build our own website. We love to express our indie spirit right along with all of the talented artisans that vend at our show.

Interview with Kat's Pick Jewelry

Kat's Pick Jewelry, a creative endeavor by Kat Hunt, will be making her first appearance at Odd Duck Bazaar this weekend. We recently tracked Kat to a local show, saw her guitar pick jewelry up-close-and-personal, and we are looking forward to sharing these rockin' pieces with you! You can't miss her because she'll be selling her items on both Saturday and Sunday in the auditorium of the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center from noon to 6pm. In the mean time, enjoy this Q & A session, and then prepare to shop till you drop!

How did you get started making guitar pick jewelry and selling it to others? It all started with my own collection of guitar picks from many live shows I had been to over the years. I made a necklace from a favorite gray pearl pick with a guitar charm and people kept asking me where I got it. Thus Kat's Pick Jewelry was born!

Can you tell us about the feedback you get from your buyers? I love hearing people ooh and ahh whenever I am showing at live events. The highest praise I have received is in the form of purchases...made by my friends. I believe that is the highest compliment that can be made for my work.

What was the last creative project you tackled and was it a success? The last major creative project I tackled was my guitar pick evening bag. I had no idea what I was in for when I found the purse frame and I thought, "I'll just make the purse with the picks covering it!" Little did I know that I was in for a great challenge. I decided that I had to do a double purple satin lining because I didn't want seams showing. Then attaching it all together was challenging and fun. I consider this project a great success...I love the piece and I've gotten wonderful feedback on it when I've vended at events

Have you had any outrageous requests as a handmade vendor? Hmm...nothing too crazy...but the most unusual request I had was for body jewelry...specifically nipple rings.

Have you learned anything from other handmade vendors? Absolutely! I have learned about varying heights of tables to give visual appeal. I have learned that you don't need to use a tablecloth all the time because anything that can cover the table and be visually appealing...as long as you cover your stuff under the table! I've also learned that it's fun to trade items with fellow vendors.

Interview with Fiyah Jelly

Fiyah Jelly, a product of L & B Delights, LLC, made it's first indie craft show debut at Odd Duck Bazaar 2014 in Downtown Hollywood. Not only did the first 100 guests at the show receive a free take home jar of this deliciousness, but hundreds of others sampled this specialty throughout both days of the event. We observed the purchases and heard the praises from countless shoppers about this new and tasty treat! Then we watched this nearly happen all over again at the Hollywood Holiday Market in December. We are thrilled to let you know, they will be joining us again for the full weekend at the next Odd Duck Bazaar on April 11th & 12th, 2015 - so no worries, you WILL be able to get your hands on those fresh jars of Fiyah Jelly! Lisa Foster and Bryan Adeline are the duo behind this fascinating stuff and we were recently lucky enough to get a few Q & A with Bryan.

How is Fiyah Jelly made? We have revised and perfected a generations old family recipe for Jamaican Scotch Bonnet Pepper Jelly. We use only fresh, non-GMO ingredients with no additives, preservatives, colorings, flavorings of any sort. 5 real ingredients brewed up in our own process.

How did you get started selling Fiyah Jelly? L&B stands for Lisa and Bryan. Soon after we got together, Lisa wanted to do something special for me. I do a lot of cooking and I like spicy so she wanted to show what she could do in the kitchen too. Although she's lived in south Florida since she was about 5, Lisa was born in Jamaica where her family is from going back many generations. Her taste still is very fond of those Jamaican flavors, and since I love spicy, she decided to make this recipe she learned from her mom: a Scotch Bonnet Pepper Jelly. So I thought it was an interesting idea even though I'd never had a pepper jelly I liked. And working with the Scotchies I knew it would be hotter than anything I'd had before. She went for it and served it up to me on a cracker with a little cream cheese, just like we do at Odd Duck. First taste was really delicious, sweet and fruity. I started to ask where was the heat and then, KAPLOW!!! Unbelievable sensation but most importantly, the flavor was still there. It wasn't blown out by the heat. First thing I yelled "YAMON, DIS FIYAH JELLY IS HOT!!!" Then I said "and THAT'S what we'll call it when we bottle it up and sell it to the world!" We're still working on the world part, but we ARE selling it as Fiyah Jelly.

Do you ever come across anyone who doesn't like the stuff? Some folks really want a milder version. But that kind of defeats the point of Fiyah Jelly. It's not for the light-tastebudded.

Hollywood Holiday Market 2014

Do you enjoy being a vendor or is it a challenge for you to be front & center with buyers? Neither of us had ever done any public sales like this before. Odd Duck 2014 was literally the first time we'd ever done it. We didn't really know what to expect but it was a total blast. I'm a pretty gregarious guy once I get going. I'm used to being in front of decent sized crowds, occasionally for the purpose of being silly or performing. In this case, I'm trying to attract people to something I really believe is a great thing that they should check out. Fairly quickly I found myself acting like a carnival barker pulling folks in to try out Fiyah Jelly who would otherwise have just continued walking past. My attitude is that we're there to sell. They are there to see what is out there and hopefully to buy it. We don't have any name recognition to speak of yet, and there's nothing else like it on the market. So it's my job to get their attention so they can try it and then decide if they want some to take home. If I can get a smile out of folks in the process, get them to come over, and give it a try, about 80% of the time, they end up buying a jar. So yes, it was a lot of fun and it resulted in wildly successful sales.

What are your goals with Fiyah Jelly? Short term is to continue to grow Fiyah Jelly as product and hopefully get it into a big market. We're looking at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. We think Fiyah Jelly could sell worldwide. The kind of heat we have is growing in popularity in the US but it's already common in most of the rest of the world. But the flavor of Fiyah Jelly isn't common anywhere except in the homes of folks who have bought some. We hope that changes.

What is one thing we might be surprised to learn about you? Lisa is an accomplished licensed massage therapist for 16+ years and no one would know when I'm out there doing my Fiyah Jelly thing, but I'm a practicing attorney and former College US History instructor.

We enthusiastically announce our first holiday show the Hollywood Holiday Market! Odd Duck Bazaar has paired up with the historic Lincoln Road Antique & Collectible Market of Miami Beach and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency to bring you two downtown streets full of unique shopping just in time for the holidays. Meet us at Harrison Street and 20th Avenue for a free shopping event from 10am to 4pm on Sunday December 14th, 2014.

Odd Duck strives to bring you the most contemporary and interesting handmades available in South Florida. We've spent many hours sorting through artisan applications to provide you with the best assortment we can get our hands on! Take part in making a positive impact in our community and support your local artists while shopping for the holidays this year!

2014 Odd Duck vendors have been notified

Sifting through the applicants for Odd Duck is always a big job.  This year we got started extra early and as always, had a huge list of applicants to consider.  The interest in our show has grown every year and sometimes it is just flat out awe inspiring to see how many super talented artists and crafters there are out there that want to participate in our show.  Choosing the vendors is not something we take lightly.  There are many things that we take into consideration.  Among other things, we look at quality, craftsmanship, attention to detail, uniqueness, variety, price point, and the ability to promote the show.  Christine and I both, independently took the time to review each and every applicant and then discussed each one and came to a decision together.  This is something that we have been chipping away at since we opened the applications back in August of 2013!  

Who's in?  Who's not?  

Christine is updating our website, continually adding vendors who we call our "official Odd Ducks".  These are the vendors who have been accepted and have locked in their commitment to our show with their booth fee payments.  You can find that page HERE.  We like to put them up as early as we can so that our shoppers (you!), can get a preview of what they may find at our show.  Our un-official Odd Ducks will be added to the list as they become official so check back often.  We also have a list of alternate vendors who will fill spots of any cancellations that may come up.  

It is always hard to tell folks who we just couldn't fit into the show that they didn't make the cut, but I notified those folks this morning.  Being a handcrafter myself, that is the worst part of this job.  There have been shows that I've applied to in the past that I didn't get into so I know how it feels.  We put our heart & soul into our crafts and it is really hard to separate the "just business" part of it.  

We are so excited about this show and although our to-do lists as producers are still long... we are READY!

Odd Duck Bazaar Website Gets a Fresh Look

Odd Duck Bazaar took a needed rest and woke up with a whole new perspective. Exactly seven months from now, Odd Duck will be showcasing the most contemporary handmade goods on the market in South Florida. At a new location on March 29 & 30, 2014, two rooms will be full of vendors waiting to share their products with local attendees. A full weekend event marks a first for Odd Duck and provides more opportunity to share this annual experience. Saturday will offer fun do-it-yourself activities and Sunday will offer live music from local acts. Admission is free for children under 12 and $5 for everyone else. Save your Saturday admission ticket for a discount on the second day, we know you'll want to be back for more! Be one of the first in line and you might get your hands on one of our free limited hand-printed bags full of goodies.

Crafters of the 'ODD KIND' saving the planet with scissors and glue

The Odd Duck Handmade Bazaar is a craft show of the oddest sort. It is difficult to describe the type of vendors and products you'll see at an indie show like this because they don't quite fit any mold. At this show, 'different' is the norm. However, there are some reoccurring themes within indie culture and one of which is the emphasis on environmental issues and sustainability.

Many of Odd Duck's artist's work are crafted from recycled parts. Some even pride themselves on using 100% recycled materials. Jack's Copper Art is made from scraps that he salvages from his day job. Reclaim2Fame, is an artist who somehow, magically turns just about any sort of material or discarded household item into sculptural robots. A few artists use discarded clothing and up-cycle pieces into new and cutting edge fashion designs or accessories.

One Beautiful World, a non-profit organization that teaches children about environmental responsibility, will be hosting a water-bottle refill station and give out 100 free reusable water bottles donated by the Hollywood CRA. Trash to Treasure, a non-profit creative re-use center whose focus is to reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfills, will be hosting a free DIY (do it yourself) craft tent where Odd Duck attendees will make beads from discarded fabrics.

The Odd Duck Handmade Bazaar and Indie Craft Fair will be held at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 31^st from noon until 6pm. Admission is $5 for adults, children are free. There will be over 80 craft vendors, live acoustic musical performances and food trucks. The first 100 customers will receive a free Odd Duck reusable tote bag with treats, coupons and a handmade gift from one of the vendors.

The Hollywood Craft Mafia is a craft show producing duo who also independently make and sell handmade goods. The HCM team has a goal of shinning the spotlight on the incredible talents of local independent artisans and craftspeople by organizing the annual Odd Duck Indie Craft Fair. Odd Duck countdown

Only 19 more sleeps until Odd Duck!
I'll be quick because I've got a to-do list that is longer than those 19 day. I'm just gonna run down some reasons that you should be shopping at Odd Duck on the 31st.

1. Handmade rocks! each piece is unique, even if you buy something from a vendor who cranks out dozens of the same product... it is still done by a HUMAN and each piece will have its own tiny differences
2. Everything you buy will have a story behind it. I love when someone complements me on something that I've purchased in the past at a show. I love to be able to tell a little story about it and it just makes me feel good.
3. You get to meet & talk to the artist. Maybe learn a little about their process, their vision, etc.
4. You cut out the middle man. Your money goes to helping support someone directly, even if it isn't their "full-time gig", it helps.

I could go on and on but I'd already mentioned above.... I've got stuff to do! See you on the 31st

Craft Mafia girls getting ready for a road trip to Sarasota

On December 10th, Christine and I will head out on our first Craft Show vending road trip!  We are going all the way to the west coast (west coast of Florida, that is).  We are both vending at the sixth annual Atomic Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, December 10th and Sunday, December 11th at the SQR Municipal Auditorium in Sarasota. New Date & Location Announced for Odd Duck Bazaar 2012

Odd Duck Handmade Bazaar and Indie Craft Fair is moving to a new location. On March 31, 2012, at the downtown Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center, you can expect a day of unique handmade crafts, art, food, live music and more. Admission is $5 for adults and children under 12 get in free. This indoor & outdoor event, with more than 70 vendors, takes place from Noon until 6:00 pm.

Rules are non-existent when it comes to indie arts & crafts and that's what the Hollywood Craft Mafia strives to represent at the Odd Duck Bazaar. Through an extensive selection process, we cherry-pick each vendor, and ensure the audience with a worthy variety of handmade goods. If it can be sewn, cut, painted, glued, sculpted, hammered, drawn, or knotted, more than likely it has been sold at an Odd Duck bazaar. Opposed to mass-produced, local artisans reconnect the mainstream with hands-on activities and aesthetics. The aspect that unites Odd Duck participants are the many creations pushed beyond traditional techniques and boundaries. Sweater Hat & Leg Warmers Tutorial

This up-cycle craft is a great way to continue the love of a favorite sweater. For the tutorial example, we have a child who out-grew last season's winter wear. We took one sweater, transformed it in a few simple steps, and now have a hat with leg warmers for next season!

First, you will need a few tools to get you through this project: measuring tape, scissors, pins, chalk, and a sewing machine. You'll also need one sweater and thread.

GETTING READY: Turn the sweater inside out. Place it neatly on a flat surface.

DETERMINING THE WIDTH: Measure the head of the person, for whom you will be making the hat for. Subtract about 4 or 5 inches then divide that number in half. This will give you the measurement for the opening of the hat when it is laying flat, two sides together. In our example, the child's head is 20" around. 20 - 4 = 16. 16/2 = 8. See figure A to place your measurement. Mark your width with chalk.

DETERMINING THE LENGTH: We made a cone shaped hat, but you can make your hat as long as you want. The standard height is about 8 inches. Determine how long you want your hat, then make a mark at that height, in the center. On our example, we made the center mark at 4" (see Figure B). Then you will sketch a semi-circle with chalk (or cone shape like our example). Go pin crazy on the inside and outside of the chalk line, pinning both sides of the sweater together. This is when you will want to make sure you line up any patterns in the sweater (see Figure C).

LETS GET SEWING: Sew on the chalk line using a strait stitch on the stretch setting. Do not sew the bottom opening of your hat! In our example, we did not need to stitch up one side of the hat because we used the sweater's original stitching.

CUT IT OUT: Trim around your stitches about a quarter-inch. You should now have what looks like a hat inside out! Lastly, use the zig-zag stretch stitch over your quarter-inch edges to keep the sweater from unraveling (see Figure D). Turn the hat right side out and you're done!

MATCHING LEG WARMERS: Cut the sleeves off the sweater, close to the armpit (or at desired length). Sew a zig zag stretch stitch around the raw edge, but don't sew the two sides together (see figure E and F). Turn them right side out, and you're finished.

Looking ahead to the Craft Show Season

Christine and I have been busily working on some upcoming events that we aren't quite ready to announce, but there are some exciting future plans that we can share with you now.  We've committed to vending in a couple of shows this fall and figured we'd tell you about it now so you can get them on your calendar early.  Christine (Belle Adore) will be vending at a new south Florida show called Art: Sunny Side Up which will be held the Hilton 100 Fairway Drive, Deerfield Beach, FL 33441 on September 11th from 10-4pm.  You can find out more on their blog or facebook page.

It is exciting to see new indie shows.  There is no need to tell you how much we love the indie craft scene, so seeing it growing just warms my heart.

Changes in the Mafia

Dear Handmade Community,

This is not a "Dear John" letter, just a little note to let you know that things are changing for the Hollywood Craft Mafia. First, let us assure that Shelley and Christine are still manning the helm and planning amazing crafty events and goodness for our community.

However, excited to focus on personal projects, Alexis and Tina are planning to move on to other pastures. It is with a conflicted and heavy heart that they both leave, there has been so much success with the Craft Mafia it's hard to walk away. They both plan on still being involved and supportive of the HCM and the handmade community; Alexis will still help create promo materials from time to time and both will volunteer for HCM crafty events whenever they get the chance.

There will also be other changes. The jam packed calendar we announced in April will be re-evaluated and more information will be announced as it becomes available.

Odd Duck was an overwhelming success and we more than doubled the number of attendees from the year before. The positive feedback we got from patrons and vendors alike made all our hard work very worthwhile. With each one of our events, the Hollywood Craft Mafia has contributed to the growing artisan community in south Florida and that will not change one bit. Thank you for your continued support of all things local and handmade.

So, How'd it go?

It has been a little over a week since our big annual event, the Odd Duck handmade Bazaar and I'm still on a little bit of an adrenaline high.  I have begun writing this post several times and I'm just at a loss for words in how to describe the event. It was fantastic!  We had a few glitches that were out of our control, but for the most part... the day went smoothly, the weather was fabulous and most everyone had a great afternoon.
